賃貸ビルのワンフロアにフォトスタジオ、アパレルショップ、ギャラリーなど多用途に使用ができるような
広くて白い空間を作ってほしい、という依頼から始まったプロジェクト。
ローコストでシンプルに、それでいて様々な場面を引き立てる背景としての空間が求められた。
建築の設計とインテリアの設計の大きな違いの一つは躯体の操作にあると考えている。
それはインテリアの設計では多くの場合で躯体を変える事ができないことにある。
否応なく表層的なデザインとなり、殆どの場合において構造躯体が与える光を只々受け入れることしかできない。
フォトスタジオやギャラリーという、人や服やアートを主役とした空間を作るにあたって、自然光の操作というただ一点のみに力を注ぐことを考える。
構造躯体に手を加えることは出来ないが、内部に湾曲した壁を挿入することで自然光を操作する。
よりシンプルに、より純粋に、白い空間のなかで光と影の背景を作る。
湾曲した壁を舐める柔らかい光、壁の隙間から漏れるパキッとした光、ざらっとした質感で光を和らげる漆喰、影が溜まったようなニッチの暗がり、揺らいで影の表情を落とすカーテン。
インテリアという限定的な要素の中で明暗のグラデーションの中にどれだけ幅を持たせられるか。
光と影の関係性のデザインを試みた空間である。
This project began with a request to create a spacious white interior within a single floor of a rental building that could flexibly accommodate multiple uses, including a photo studio, apparel shop, and gallery.
The client sought a low-cost and simple space that could nevertheless function as a compelling backdrop capable of enhancing a wide variety of scenes and activities.
One of the fundamental differences between architectural design and interior design, in our view, lies in the ability to manipulate the building structure itself.
In interior design, the structural frame often cannot be altered.
As a result, the design inevitably becomes superficial in nature, and in most cases one can do little more than accept the light conditions imposed by the existing structure.
In designing a space such as a photo studio or gallery—where people, clothing, and artwork become the protagonists—we chose to focus entirely on a single theme: the manipulation of natural light.
Although the structural frame could not be modified, natural light was carefully controlled through the insertion of curved interior walls.
More simple, more pure — creating a backdrop of light and shadow within an all-white space.
Soft light grazing along curved walls, sharp beams leaking through narrow gaps, rough-textured plaster diffusing the light, dark niches where shadows seem to accumulate, and curtains that gently sway to soften and animate the shadows.
Within the limited framework of interior design, the project explores how much richness and depth can be created through gradations of brightness and darkness.
It is a space that attempts to design the relationship between light and shadow itself.
